While the poetic artistry cannot do away with the sadness inherent in a sad poem, it imbues that sadness with aesthetic effect and greater significance.

-Anna Christina Soy Ribeiro, The Value of Sad Poetry

hope used to swirl
through the air in
vespers of light

I want to sip that air again
taste summer wind
feel stars on my tongue

the breeze is
poison now
an illusory seduction

the virus rides
our collective breath
sung and sighed

like a bandit it steals
vowels until all that
remain are h and p

remnants of a word
a concept
a reason to live

the virus cannot
comprehend how our
lives hinge on one word

without hope
our inner light
vanishes

without hope
the stars
no longer glow

without hope
poems end
in doom
